A long day at the Sharkpool and eventually a pretty good crowd to see 1st grade. Day opened with a great game of u8s with our Gold and White teams playing each other. In the other junior games a good win to the u16s, followed by the u17s with a lot of help from u16s really hanging in well against a strong Warnervale team. Once the school reps season is over both of our teams will be stronger. The u19s were missing a few players and did well to be only down 5-7 at the half against tough opposition. Kariong did all of the second half scoring for the final 5-28 result. Isaiah Fairless scored the try and a point. Cooper Elliott 2pts and in probably his first ever game at half back Tristan Morris-bowyer got the 3 points and players player! 3rds was pretty tight as well, and with a lot of absences it made the task even harder. Joshua Fash Meadham helped out and even had a long spell in the centres, though he scored his try with a usual front rowers charge. Final score was 21-12 with Rob Hurell and Gareth Brown getting the other tries, all 3 converted by Will Byrne. 1pt Wayne Lancaster, 2pts Connor Starkey, 3pts and players player Will Byrne. 2nds got off to a good start and had a 10-0 lead against a team with John Paterson & Daniel McClelland doing their coaching - they are a good squad with lots of good young players who might be playing first grade if they wanted. They kept coming at the Sharks and eventually took the lead 10-12. From there we had a lot of chances to finish ahead but just couldn't finish off the plays to get over the line. A late penalty chance went wide and they held us out until full time. Looked like one of their boys broke a leg, best wishes from all of us at Avoca for a quick recovery. Then on to 1st grade and the Lakes started out on fire, throwing the ball around, running strongly and getting the first try of the game. Once we got possession and held it, the tone of the game changed and by half time our lead was 28-12. To their credit they kept attacking and though the scoreline blew out it was hard match where the win had to be earned. The late highlight was Elliot Dawkins showing some fancy work with his feet and scoring under the posts .. then not letting anyone else near the ball he calmly slotted the conversion with a drop kick as the full time whistle blew! Final score was 49-26, other try scorers were Matt Anderson (2), Chad Martin (2), Joshua Fash Meadham, & Blake Jacob, Connor Kondrat converted them all and might have got 7 if Elliot hadn't got his kick in before Connor could get there. Well done to Cooper Elliott on getting his well deserved first game time in 1sts. 1pt Liam Donsworth & Matthew Ritchie, 2pts Blake Jacob & Elliot Dawkins, 3pts Chris Newton, with Elliot Dawkins voted players player. The half time kick for cash was finally won, Keith Ferrier getting drawn out of the hat and in a very smart decision selecting Will Byrne to kick on his behalf in the hope Will would keep his perfect kicking record from 3rds intact. That happened so Keith won $200, only half the available prize as he didn't take the kick himself. Prize pool back to $100 at next home game. Next week the second round starts with grade teams are playing Gosford at the Showground, with the u19s playing Terrigal at Woongarrah. Cheers Boys!!
