25 June Review

The coldest day of the season had the Sharks seniors at Warnervale. The day started with the u19s having a good 19-0 win. Tries to Lochie Peruch, Isaac Barnes & Michael Hobden with 2 conversions to Connor Kondrat. 1pt Harrisen Bowcock & Tim Newton, 2pts Liam Donsworth, 3pts Isaac Barnes. Players player was Michael Hobden.
We also scored 19 in 3rds, but so did Warnervale for a drawn result. It was a big game for Lochie Peruch backing up from the Colts, he scored 2 tries, kicked 2 conversons, got 2pts and players player! Daniel Ranson scored the other try with 1pt to Connor Kondrat and 3pts to Tim Newton - the match sheet tells me Tim was halfback! A new career for our u19s prop??
2nds were in a very tight match and held on to claim a 15-13 victory. Tries to Jake McPhie & Matt Norman with Sam Evans kicking a conversion and penalty. 1pt to Mitch Mitchell, 2pts Rhys Stratton, 3pts and players player Matt Norman.
Then on to the top grade and a minute silence pre-game in memory of Greg Pierce. Warnervale opened the scoring with an intercept, but by half time we had a 15-12 lead. That went out to 20-12 before a couple of quick tries had them back in front 24-20. A late try got us back in front 25-24 before they scored off the last play of the match and we went down 25-29. Tries to Blake Jacob, Chad Martin, Julian Bacigalupo, Luke Wiseman & Sam Evans. 1pt Chad Martin & Luke Wiseman, 2pts Peter Steele, 3pts & players player Julian Bacigalupo. Congratulations to Joe Carroll on his first grade run on debut, hope the shoulder is feeling better Joe!
Next Saturday Colts play Terrigal 11:20 at Slade Park and 3rds play The Entrance at the Sharkpool at 12:30. Top 2 grades have a bye. Cheers Boys!

Vale Greg Pierce

Vale Greg Pierce. Much has been written today about the sad passing of a Rugby league legend on 24 June. Greg's association with "Sharks" continued after his Cronulla RL career finished when he moved to the Central Coast and became a player with Avoca Beach Rugby. His contribution to our Club was not limited to the playing field, he was also Club president in 2001. Thanks to Andy Hoban for the words below and the photo.
"Greg Pierce was a fitness fanatic who played some Rugby Union at school before being graded for Cronulla Rugby League where he became Club 1st grade captain. He played Test and World Cup RL matches for Australia, including one match as captain.
He moved to the Central Coast to take up a job with Gosford Council as an engineer. In the late 1980s he joined ABSLSC where rowed surfboats and was a very efficient patrol member. His children joined the nippers and the family loved the Avoca Beach community life. In winter Greg joined the Rugby Club to play Golden Oldies rugby with the Avoca Beach Golden Oldies. Even at that stage of his life his football ability was exceptional and he was soon playing 3rd grade and helping out in 1st grade. The greatest memory of his playing style was his cover tackles from #8, usually from across the field driving wingers into touch. At least one of those a game! Opposition players sometimes thanked him after recovering from a tackle, when they realised the tackler was one of Australia's sporting greats. It was magic to watch as a spectator and even better to see when playing with him in the Golden Oldies. Rest In Peace Greg Pierce "
